Description from the seller
Beautiful pair of antique trench art vases, made from French 75 mm artillery shell casings dating from World War I, probably 1916. These two brass pieces feature remarkable decorative work with floral relief motifs, elegant stems and leaves sculpted on a finely engraved and textured background. This type of object was traditionally crafted from recovered military casings, then transformed into decorative pieces by soldiers or artisans during or after the Great War. The bases bear original military markings, notably “75 DE C” and a mark “16,” likely corresponding to the year 1916. A handsome matched ensemble representative of early 20th-century military craftsmanship, displaying an old patina, signs of oxidation, wear marks, and slight deformations along the edges. General condition in keeping with the photographs.
