Stadsgezicht, an oil painting from the Netherlands dating to 1930–1940, sold with a frame.
Description from the seller
L. Hartman (20th century) - Atmospheric village scene with a distinctive church tower
Description
For sale: a beautiful and characterful oil painting by the artist L. Hartman, dating from the 20th century.
This work shows an idyllic and nostalgic village scene. Central to the composition is a sturdy, red-brick church tower that rises high above the surrounding buildings. In the foreground traditional whitewashed houses with red tiles and thatched roofs adorn the scene, surrounded by lush greenery. A lone figure on the sandy path enhances the rustic and serene atmosphere of early rural life.
Hartman employs in this work a precise, impressionistic brushwork with rich impasto (visible paint texture), which creates a wonderful sense of depth and liveliness in the sky and the masonry. The painting is clearly signed with 'L. Hartman' on the lower left.
The artwork is housed in a classic, matching off-white wooden frame that complements the piece superbly and is ready to hang.
Details
• Artist: Justine Louise Hartman (1905-1970)
• Technique: Oil on canvas stretched over a wooden panel
• Period: 20th century
• Signature: Hand-signed on the lower left
• Condition: In good, original condition with a lovely patina. The colors appear slightly aged. A light cleaning of the painting should remedy that. The frame shows minor signs of aging that contribute to its authentic character.
• Included: Classical wooden framing
