Description from the seller
Grand maritime navigation compass from the antique era, PILOT model, manufactured by Observator in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, probably dating from the mid-20th century, around 1940-1960. This professional navigation instrument was designed to indicate the course of ships at sea thanks to its magnetic dial graduaded over 360 degrees. It features an imposing cylindrical copper construction, with a wide brass band and a gimbal suspension that keeps the compass horizontal despite the ship's movements. The dial bears the original inscription “Observator Rotterdam,” while the mount is marked “PILOT” and bears the number 11724. A beautiful antique maritime instrument, presenting an authentic patina, signs of oxidation and wear. The inner dial shows significant deterioration of its coating, with cracks and missing areas visible. The instrument is offered in its current condition, in accordance with the photographs, with no verification of operation or accuracy. An interesting piece for collectors of antique nautical instruments and maritime decoration.
Highly sought after in the worlds of industrial design, scientific curiosities, vintage medical technology, laboratory optics, steampunk, and rare measuring instruments. Ideal for a collector, industrial loft decor, cabinet of curiosities, scientific display case (theodolite, microscope, sextant, compass).
