Family Scene with Dog and Cat is an unsigned 19th-century oil painting attributed to the Flemish School, depicting an interior scene and presented in a frame.
Description from the seller
An evocative genre painting depicting an intimate scene of domestic life in a period interior. Several figures are gathered around a large fireplace, each apparently engaged in a different activity, while a standing male figure near the window adds an intriguing element to the composition.
The scene is enriched by the presence of a dog and a cat in the foreground, together with various small objects on the floor. The arrangement of the figures, furnishings and animals creates a lively narrative and offers an engaging glimpse into everyday domestic life.
The painting is characterised by a detailed composition, a rich interplay of light and shadow, and a predominantly dark palette that enhances the atmosphere of the interior. Its subject and overall style evoke the tradition of Northern European genre painting.
The artist is unknown, and the attribution to the Flemish tradition should be understood as stylistic rather than a confirmed geographical origin. The proposed dating to the early 19th century has not been independently verified.
The canvas has been relined and displays a visible craquelure pattern. These features should be considered alongside the other characteristics of the painting when assessing its age and condition.
The artwork is presented in a later dark wooden frame with decorative gold inner mouldings. The frame shows minor signs of age and complements the painting aesthetically.
Dimensions
Painting: 56 × 40.5 cm
