AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Rare Japanese bronze Koro / Jardinière – Meiji period. Japan (c. 1880–1910)

A particularly decorative and characterful Japanese bronze object from the refined Meiji period (1868–1912), dating from circa 1880–1910.

This square, slightly rounded piece rests on four short corner feet and features on the sides detailed cast-iron/bronze handles in the shape of stylized animal heads. The side panels are richly decorated with refined reliefs against a traditional geometric background pattern. The warm golden-brown patina gives the bronze a lovely, well-aged appearance.

Function and background: The object is particularly versatile. It can serve excellently as a small jardinière / decorative planter, but the form and finish also suggest it may originally have been intended as a Japanese incense burner (koro). In the Meiji period, Japanese bronze art enjoyed its absolute heyday. Traditional motifs were combined with masterful casting and engraving work, with many of these quality pieces exported to Europe during the heyday of Japonisme.

Specifications:

• Origin: Japan

• Period: Meiji period (c. 1880–1910)
