Description of the work
Interesting oil on canvas stylistically linked to the European Post-Impressionist School of the 20th century, with a marked influence of French intimacy painting and the pictorial currents developed by the Nabi group.
The composition depicts two nude female figures in an interior domestic setting, beside a wide window visually opening onto a garden. One woman stands, with her back to the viewer, while the other remains seated, slightly turned toward her companion.
The scene stands out for its serene, contemplative atmosphere, created by a delicate blend of violets, mauves, pinks, soft greens, and warm tones. The light coming from the window wraps the figures and establishes a subtle contrast between the flesh tones and the interior shadows.
The brushwork, loose and visible, contributes to the integration of the figures into the environment, while the simplification of contours and the chromatic treatment of the volumes give the composition a modern, expressive character.
Style, context and influences
The work relates to the tradition of European Post-Impressionism, particularly to the intimate currents that developed in France between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
These tendencies placed special emphasis on representing everyday life, private spaces, and the human figure, gradually moving away from academic description to explore the expressive possibilities of color, light, and composition.
In this context, the painting shows notable stylistic affinities with the work of Pierre Bonnard (1867–1947), one of the main representatives of the Nabi group and a fundamental figure in the development of modern intimacy painting.
Bonnard frequently depicted domestic scenes, interiors lit by windows, and representations of the female nude, using delicate chromatic harmonies and a free brushwork that subordinated drawing to the relations between light and color.
The work also evokes certain aspects of the artistic language of Édouard Vuillard (1868–1940), especially in the integration of figures into the interior space and in the ornamental treatment of surfaces.
Furthermore, the representation of the nudes through soft tones and partially dissolved contours allows connections with the evolution of early 20th-century French figurative painting.
The window plays a fundamental role in the compositional structure, creating a transition between the intimate space of the figures and the exterior landscape, built from small patches of color that suggest the vegetation and the brightness of the garden.
Thus, the work combines a recognizable figurative representation with a free interpretation of form and color, placing it within the continuity of European post-Impressionist and intimate trends.
The result is a composition of notable chromatic sensitivity and contemplative character, in which the female nude is approached from an artistic and quotidian perspective, distant from the idealized aims of traditional academicism.
Framing and conservation status
The work is presented with an elegant golden ornamental frame, composed of stepped moldings and classically inspired profiles, which complements the painting’s chromatic delicacy.
The canvas and the frame may show small old holes caused by woodworm. These areas have already been treated against xylophagous insects. The possible marks and signs of these old affections are part of the conservation status of the wooden elements.
The frame is included as a gift, with no commercial value, and therefore not part of the artwork’s financial appraisal.
The conservation status is as seen in the photographs, which are an integral part of the description.
Packaging and shipping
The painting will be carefully packed using appropriate protective materials to ensure its safety during transport.
Any possible customs duties, import taxes, and local fees will be the responsibility of the buyer where applicable.
Shipments to island territories or areas with special logistical conditions may be subject to additional costs.
