A telescopic longue-vue of Empire antique style, made in France by Cauchoix and dated 1800–1850, in good condition with some wear, constructed of gilt brass, leather, crystal and glass, and measuring 51 cm high by 5.3 cm deep and 5.3 cm wide.
Description from the seller
- Subject: Antique telescopic spyglass (4 draws).
- Manufacturer / Signature: Robert-Aglaé Cauchoix (engraving clearly visible on the first brass tube: “Lunette Vitro-Cristalline, par Cauchoix Breveté à Paris”).
- Period: First half of the 19th century (circa 1810 – 1840, during the First Empire, the Restoration, or the July Monarchy).
- Condition description:
- The instrument: Entirely original, preserves its period patina (not cleaned, kept “in its natural state” to preserve authenticity). The draw mechanism works.
- The optics: Functional, the view through the telescope remains clear and usable despite its age.
- The case: Original rigid brown leather case. It shows pronounced wear due to its age and history, with a damaged/broken area on one edge or mounting. The case also bears a handwritten period inscription partially faded, starting with the word “Capitaine.”
