Description from the seller
# Antique silver pocket watch – Barraud & Co. London – Sterling silver – Full Plate – No. 1553 – Before 1850 – Working
Exceptionally fine antique English pocket watch, signed **Barraud & Co. London**, crafted in solid sterling silver and featuring a beautifully decorated mechanical movement.
A characterful collector's item from the rich tradition of English watchmaking, where refined craftsmanship, high-grade mechanics, and classic elegance come together.
### Movement
The pocket watch features a mechanical hand-wound movement, executed in the traditional English **Full Plate construction**. The gilded-looking movement is beautifully finished and fitted with blued screws and a characteristic balance bridge.
The movement bears the signature:
**Barraud & Co. – London – No. 1553**
The finely made regulator is marked with the English indications 'Slow' and 'Fast'. The movement can be unfolded from the case, revealing the special construction and finish in full view.
### Dial
The classic white enamel dial is in very fine condition and features:
– Black Roman numerals
– Elegant blued steel hands
– Small seconds hand at the 6 o’clock position
– Subtle minute markers around the dial
The combination of white enamel, black Roman numerals, and blue hands gives the watch a particularly stylish and authentic appearance.
### Silver case
The case is made of **solid English sterling silver (925/1000)** and bears several historical silver hallmarks, including:
– Lion Passant – indicating sterling silver
– Leopard's Head – London hallmark
– English duty/date letter
– Master mark 'WF'
The back is beautifully adorned with a fine geometric guilloche pattern and a decorative central cartouche, surrounded by ornamental scroll motifs. The cartouche is unengraved and contains no personal initials. The guilloche decoration is exceptionally well preserved and still clearly perceptible.
### Condition
Considering its considerable age, the pocket watch is in very good optical condition with light, age-appropriate signs of wear.
– The mechanical movement functions
– The enamel dial is undamaged
– The guilloche decor is well preserved
– The silver case shows only light signs of wear
