Description from the seller
Louis HOTTOT (1829-1905) – “The Tambourine Player” – Large Orientalist sculpture in polychrome cast iron, signed and authenticated
Rare and spectacular sculpture from the Napoléon III / Belle Époque era, signed and authenticated Louis Hottot, a major figure of French Orientalist sculpture in the 19th century.
A young dancer, seated nonchalantly on a Moorish-style stool, head slightly tilted and dreamy gaze, holds a tambourine against her hip. Her posture, her subtle smile and the movement of her arm give the whole piece remarkable grace and life.
A work of great finesse
Turban tied with adorned pieces, beads and pendants
Double strand of pearls and medals
Bracelets and armbands finely chased
Striped bodice in rust, turquoise and gold tones
Green draped skirt, cinched with a fringed scarf and golden tasselled pom-poms
Tambourine with a geometric raised decoration
Openwork Hispano-Moorish-style stool, draped rug and architectured base with chiselled decoration, resting on a red velvet cushion
An original polychromy
The polychrome patina, in greens, ochres, reds and golds, is remarkably preserved and gives it a very decorative presence. The reliefs of the material, the modelling of the drapes and the details of the adornment testify to the quality of the casting and the sculptor’s hand.
About the artist
Louis Hottot, a pupil of Cavelier and Jouffroy, exhibited at the Salons and established himself as one of the great interpreters of Orientalism, a movement highly sought after by collectors. His sculptures, blending anatomical precision, sensuality and rich ornamentation, are today highly sought after on the art market.
