AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Important and magnificent circular Kutani porcelain collectible plate (Kutani-yaki), with an imposing diameter of 30 cm. This piece, rich in decorative value, beautifully illustrates the craftsmanship of the Ishikawa prefecture workshops during the Meiji era, here characterized by the use of polychrome enamels applied in thick relief (overglaze in relief).

The central medallion presents a refined naturalistic scene: two terrestrial birds (paradise quails) rest on a stylized rocky islet in the middle of glazed waves. They nestle in the shade of an old gnarled tree bearing large pink-orange peonies or chrysanthemums. The details of the petals and leaves are painted with thick enamels that create a superb relief perceptible to the touch and under light.

The rim is typical of Kutani’s chromatic palette with its deep green enamelled background, textured with fine black swirls hand-painted. It incorporates four polylobed cartouches. A fine dark red-brown trim structures the composition.

The reverse of the plate is just as meticulous: the rim is decorated with three stylized flowering and leafy stems in green and yellow enamels.

The mark on the back (the green enamel square) is a highly sought-after historical marker: it is the “Fuku” mark (福), meaning “Happiness” or “Prosperity.” In Kutani ceramics, this mark draws inspiration from ancient Chinese porcelains and often signs pieces in a particular style called Ao-Kutani (Green Kutani) or Ko-Kutani (Old Kutani reinterpreted). It confirms the authenticity of the Ishikawa ateliers’ artistic approach at the end of the 19th century.
