Magnificent watercolor signed by Nicole Rousseau-Grolée, a French artist, dating from the 1960s. It depicts a rural landscape in the background, after a foreground dominated by the bare branches of a forest in winter.

The composition presents a bucolic and figurative rural landscape, rich in narrative and descriptive details. Soft color combinations, delineated by fine strokes that outline trees and foliage, frame a small village where rooftops stand out in pink, blue and white tones, characteristic of the Breton region of Brittany. The color palette consists of subdued and sober tones that contrast with subtle touches of more intense colors, adding light and volume to the work. The artist achieves, with great mastery, to create a poetic atmosphere that envelops the viewer’s perception.

Watercolor is a painting technique that uses water-based media on paper. It is an exceptional medium for conveying emotions and luminous sensations through water-soluble pigments. It is a medium of great complexity and difficult to master; mistakes are especially hard to correct, which requires great precision, drawing dexterity and an excellent command of color. It is precisely these qualities that confer charm and value to watercolor.

Nicole Rousseau-Grolée was born in Paris in 1930, to a family of artists. She studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and perfected her technique in the studio of artist Chapelain-Midy.

She mastered various techniques, such as oil and watercolor, specializing in rural and marine landscapes, with magistral results endowed with a rich poetic texture. Throughout her career, she received numerous national prizes and recognitions, with numerous exhibitions, both in France and abroad, as well as various distinctions.
