AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Large & Highly Decorative Zardozi Embroidery Wall Hanging with Coloured Cabochon Stones – 95 × 68 cm – c. 1900–1930

Description

A large and richly decorated Zardozi embroidery wall hanging, dating approximately to c. 1900–1930, entirely hand-worked with extensive gold-toned and copper-toned metal-thread embroidery and embellished with numerous coloured cabochon stones and beads.

The composition is centred around a prominent multi-pointed floral/star medallion, surrounded by an exceptionally dense arrangement of scrolling floral and foliate motifs. Layers of coiled metallic thread and raised embroidery create a pronounced three-dimensional texture throughout the surface.

Numerous floral settings are decorated with coloured cabochon stones in shades of green, red, blue and pale blue. The stones have not been professionally tested and are therefore described according to their appearance only.

The turquoise-coloured textile ground creates a striking contrast with the metallic embroidery. The wide outer border is decorated with repeating foliate motifs and additional coloured beads, while the edges are finished with a decorative metallic fringe.

The workmanship is characteristic of traditional Zardozi metal-thread embroidery, distinguished by its elaborate use of metallic threads, coiled wire and raised hand embroidery.

The reverse is covered with a turquoise textile backing and fitted with fabric hanging loops, allowing the piece to be displayed as a wall hanging. The reverse and construction are clearly shown in the photographs.
