Title: Lively Beach by the Sea
Technique: oil on canvas
Artist: Antonia Komisarek (1925–2016)
Overall size: 27 × 41 cm
Condition: Good condition
Provenance: Marcel Guiot Gallery Collection.
Antonia Komisarek (1925–2016) was a French painter of Polish origin, a singular figure in Art Brut and Naïve Art, whose unclassifiable body of work is beginning to be rediscovered in the art market. A self-taught artist, she established herself through her absolute freedom of creation and her deeply rebellious spirit, challenging academic conventions with canvases that reveal subtle influences of Cubism and Surrealism. Her singularity lay notably in the use of recuperated supports as unexpectedly varied as they were varied for her compositions, painting with equal fervor on cupboard doors, polystyrene, pieces of furniture boards, Isorel, or traditional canvases. Her painting style moved fluidly between naive expressionism and pure abstraction, exploring recurring themes such as bouquets, landscapes, and mysterious figures. Her creations were distinguished by a vibrant palette in which joy and spontaneity continually shone through.
