Suzanne Tourte (1904–1979) is a French painter, printmaker and lithographer born in Cormontreuil in the Marne. Demonstrating from a young age undeniable artistic aptitudes, she chose to settle in Paris at the age of twenty to join the heart of the international avant-garde. Moving within the capital’s most prestigious literary and intellectual circles, she rubbed shoulders with major figures of her time such as André Maurois, Hervé Bazin, Paul Guth, and Louise de Vilmorin. Her stylistic journey testifies to a remarkable and constant technical evolution. Her early works initially align with a classical figurative tradition. She later developed a very personal manner, described as the “enroulements” period, characterized by figures whose contour is vigorously defined by a line. It was in the 1950s that her art reached full maturity with the advent of her geometricized period, followed by a so-called serene artistic phase. Renowned for her immense talent as a painter-engraver, she left behind a prolific and varied body of work, including oils, gouaches, lithographs, and numerous pencil drawings. Her preferred subjects regularly depict intimate scenes, landscapes, feminine portraits, maternities, and studies of animals. She died on 18 April 1979 in Argenteuil.
