Maurice-Élie Sarthou (1911–1999) is a major French painter of the New School of Paris, born in Bayonne and trained at the Beaux-Arts of Montpellier and then Paris. A drawing teacher to support his independence, his career took a decisive turn in 1955 when he won the prestigious Prix de la Critique. This recognition opened the doors to national museums and allowed him to exhibit internationally, notably in New York and in Switzerland. His work, initially figurative, evolved toward a vibrant landscape abstraction where color and light play central roles. Deeply inspired by the South of France, he transposes onto canvas the essence of the Camargue, Provence, the Alpilles and the maritime landscapes of Sète. His powerful compositions revolve around natural elements such as water, fire and earth, translated through a dynamic brushwork and a blazing chromatic palette. He devoted his life to creative activity at his studios in Sète and Paris, the latter city where he passed away in 1999, leaving a significant artistic heritage.
