Mid-century hall lamp – structured glass / ice glass – nickel-colored metal – circa the 1960s

A particularly atmospheric Mid-Century hanging lamp in lantern form, equipped with four substantial panels of clear structured glass in an elegant metal frame. The combination of the architectural lines, the long chain, and the highly textured glass gives this lamp a pronounced 1960s character.

The most beautiful element is without a doubt the glass. The irregular, almost icy texture refracts light in countless directions and, when the lamp is lit, creates a lively and sparkling lighting effect. This type of textured glass is often referred to in international vintage trade as “ice glass.”

Similar Austrian Mid-Century lamps from the 1960s, among others by J.T. Kalmar, were built from four ice-glass panels in a nickel-plated metal frame and also hung from a chain. This combination of materials and construction is characteristic of high-quality European lighting from that period. Other documented examples from the 1960s combine thick structured glass with a metal lantern construction to strongly break and at the same time soften the light.

This lamp is not visibly marked and is therefore intentionally not attributed to Kalmar or any other specific manufacturer. In form, materials, and technique, however, it fits superbly within European Mid-Century lighting from around the 1960s.

The four glass facets taper slightly downward and are enclosed by vertical metal bars. At the top there are gracefully curved metal connections, while the bottom is closed with attractive curved metal details and a semicircular ornament. The original look is completed by the metal chain and ceiling cap.

A beautiful lamp for a hall, vestibule, stairwell, entrance, or above a small table. Even when the lamp is not lit, it is a striking decorative object; when switched on, the glass structure comes fully to life.

Condition
Good authentic vintage condition with signs of use and aging appropriate to the age. The metal frame, chain, and ceiling cap show localized patina, discoloration, oxidation traces, and minor wear. This is especially visible in the detail photos.

The structured glass shows no cracks in the available photos and retains its beautiful relief texture. The photos are an integral part of the condition description.
