Description from the seller

Ancient painting, oil on panel, from the 17th century, depicting the Annunciation Madonna.

Interesting devotional painting depicting the Virgin of the Annunciation, executed in oil on panel and attributable to the figurative culture developed around the models of Scipione Pulzone (Gaeta, c. 1550 – Rome, 1598).
The composition presents the Virgin in half figure, with the head delicately inclined, the gaze lowered and the characteristic white veil overlapped on the blue mantle. The image derives from the fortunate model of Scipione Pulzone’s Virgin of the Annunciation, taken from the famous Annunciation of 1587, from which the same artist produced variants and replicas of the Virgin’s figure alone, later the subject of numerous derivations.
Particularly significant is the presence, in the upper part, of the inscription “ECCE ANCILLA DOMINI” (“Behold the handmaiden of the Lord”), Evangelical formula directly referring to the Virgin’s response to the Annunciation and coherent with the iconographic identification of the figure as the Virgin of the Annunciation.
The painting thus appears not to be a generic representation of the Madonna, but to belong to the fortune and diffusion of devotional models of Pulzonean origin, through an autonomous reworking of the Annunciation figure.

The work is presented in generally fair condition, with evident signs of time and prior restoration interventions. The painted surface shows widespread craquelure, particularly evident in the light areas of the flesh tones and the veil, as well as numerous retouches and repaints, detectable also under ultraviolet light examination. The surface varnish appears oxidized and altered, with deposits and heterogeneity due to the stratification of the conservation treatments. The poplar wooden support, of notable thickness, shows a slight curvature of the panel, as well as marks, insect holes and wear consistent with its ancient conservation history. There are also some irregularities and signs of ancient interventions on the back. Overall the work appears solid and with a coherent historical patina, testifying to its authenticity and natural conservational evolution over time.

The painting is accompanied by a beautiful classic-style frame of relatively recent period. Noted are defects, losses and signs of wear, as well as restorations and additions. The frame is included as a courtesy and does not constitute an integral part of the artwork; any damage to it will not constitute grounds for complaint or cancellation of the order.

Measurements of the painting: 36.5 x 27 cm - Measurements of the frame: 47 x 37.5 cm

The work is accompanied by a photographic certificate of authenticity, in accordance with current legal regulations.
