Description from the seller
Large antique Japanese Imari dish – Meiji/Taishō period – circa 1900–1920
Beautiful large, octagonal Japanese Imari porcelain dish, presumably dating from the late Meiji or early Taishō period, about 1900–1920.
This particularly decorative dish has a diameter of no less than 29.5 cm and is richly adorned with refined, multicolored hand-painting in the traditional Japanese Imari style.
The broad, eight-sided rim is built from an impressive interplay of geometric patterns, floral motifs, and graceful ornaments in cobalt blue, iron red, orange, soft green and turquoise, with subtle gold accents.
The central area is decorated with a symmetrical blue floral medallion, surrounded by fine decorative motifs. The combination of the detailed painting and the striking octagonal design gives this dish a special character.
The back is also beautifully finished with hand-painted blue ornaments. Inside the stand ring there is a small blue painted mark.
Age and origin
The dish is attributed to Japan based on style, execution, and comparable material, presumably late 19th to early 20th century.
A nearly identical example, with the same characteristic painting, shape and dimensions, is offered by the American antique dealer Heather And Company via Chairish as an antique Japanese Imari dish from around 1910.
This forms an interesting reference for the suspected origin and age.
