Young played one season of college basketball for the Oklahoma Sooners from 2017 to 2018. In 2018 he declared for the NBA draft, where he was selected fifth by the Dallas Mavericks. He was traded by the Mavericks together with a first-round pick to the Atlanta Hawks for Luka Dončić. In his first season he played 81 games for the Hawks and was selected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. In the 2019/20 season he played sixty games and was selected for the first time as an NBA All-Star.
In the 2020/21 season he helped the Hawks reach the playoffs for the first time and succeed in reaching the Conference Finals where they lost to the Milwaukee Bucks. The following season they reached the playoffs via the play-ins but lost in the first round. He was named to the All-NBA Third Team at the end of the season and had become an NBA All-Star for a second time that season.
