Description from the seller

These two icons of Romanian origin were created in memory of the period of Iconoclasm, which developed in the Byzantine Empire between the 8th and 9th centuries (promoted by emperors Leo III and Constantine V), that prohibited and fought the cult of sacred images to prevent the risk of idolatry.

In that period images were destroyed and burned; these two current true icons aim to be a historical and artistic memory.

The icons are traditionally hand-painted with egg tempera colors, on a gesso ground stretched on canvas and wooden panel; subsequently the wood is carbonized to imitate the originals (few) that have survived.

They are therefore the image of historical and religious memory of a sinister period, rare works of art that cannot be missing in a Wunderkammer, a room of wonders that collects objects of “special” art.

The two Madonnas represent: the first the Virgin Eleusa, or Mother of God of Tenderness (Theotokos Eleousa), the second the Mother of God (Theotokos), recognizable by the Greek inscriptions abbreviated on the sides of the halo, apparently attributable to the traditional formula MP ΘΥ, “Mother of God.”

They come from Eikon Artis (Atelier Eikon): located in Hlincea (Iași), it is one of the largest Romanian entities in the production and marketing of icons. Bought on-site toward the end of the 1990s by an Italian engineer who worked in the oil industry for ENI (acquired by the heirs).

The icons have been treated with a layer of carnauba wax for protection on the painted part, and with an acrylic fixative on the back to prevent pulverization of the carbonized wood.

The photos are part of the description.

Very quickly and well packed with polystyrene and/or pluriboll, and shipped with tracking and insurance with the best shipping agencies.
The shipping cost includes shipment tracking, packaging costs, and insurance of the work.
Due to issues with customs duties and procedures, we do not ship to the USA.
Corsica and other non-Italian European islands to be agreed.
