AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Ancient painting, oil on canvas, dating from the 17th century, depicting a Scene of battle with cavalry and fortified city.

The composition depicts a lively clash of cavalry set in a hilly landscape dominated, in the background, by a heights on which the remains of a fortified city rise. The scene develops through a succession of perspective planes, from the uneven ground in the foreground, scattered with fallen soldiers and abandoned weapons, to the rear hills that fade into the atmospheric distance.
The narrative core consists of the dense group of horsemen engaged in combat, in which a light-colored horse stands out at the center, a luminous element emerging from the darker mass of the figures and helping to visually organize the crowded composition. Around it horses and fighters overlap in hurried poses, among armors, clothes in warm colors and red and blue capes, while some soldiers on the ground heighten the dramatic character of the episode. On the left side, a formation of cavalry unfolds along the slope, widening the scene and suggesting the continuation of the clash beyond the central group.
The landscape plays an essential role in the balance of the composition. The greenish hills, the fortified architectures, and the large plume of smoke rising at the center of the scene define the depth of space and introduce a strong contrast between the bustle of the combat and the breadth of the natural setting. The sky, crossed by clouds illuminated by golden reflections and by heavier masses, contributes to the atmospheric rendering of the whole, while the chromatic range, played on earthier browns, deep greens, and the liveliest accents of the garments, gives unity to the scene.

The work shows compositional and thematic affinities with 17th-century Dutch battle painting, and in particular with the figurative tradition of Wouwerman. The treatment of equestrian groups, the presence of the light-colored horse as visual focal point, the arrangement of fallen figures in the foreground, and the integration of combat within a landscape with fortifications recall recurring solutions in Pieter Wouwerman’s production and within his circle. Such consonances therefore suggest an approach to this figurative context. On the frame there is an old plaque with attribution to the same Peter Wouwerman.

The work presents generally good condition, with signs of aging consistent with its age. There are some scattered restoration points, in addition to slight underlayers and surface cracking of the painting, overall of modest extent and not at all compromising the legibility of the depiction. The craquelure is homogeneous and attributable to the period, with no signs of active detachment. The original canvas has a good condition lining that ensures proper support and tensioning. Behind it are visible some repairs. The wooden frame seems to have been replaced at the time of the lining. Overall the work is solid, well preserved and with a coherent historical patina, testifying to its authenticity and natural conservation evolution over time.

The painting is presented in an important antique frame, subsequently re-gilt, which preserves a rich ornamental apparatus with vegetal and rocaille motifs. Light flaws, signs of time and restorations are noted. The frame is included as a courtesy and does not form an integral part of the artwork; any damage to it will not constitute grounds for complaint or cancellation of the order.
