Description from the seller
Beautiful watercolor by the artist Maximiliaan Leonard Kitzinger (1811–1882).
Kitzinger was a originally German artist who settled in Nijmegen around 1823. Later he lived and worked for a long time in Amsterdam and for a short time in Antwerp.
He was active during the Romantic period. His body of work mainly consists of (idyllic) landscapes, often with staffage (such as figures and cattle) and architectural elements such as ruins and castles. He regularly exhibited at the Exhibition of Living Masters.
The work shows a romantic, idealized park- or estate-landscape with a striking medieval-looking tower and gatehouse. In the foreground there are figures in historic or folkloric attire, together with grazing and drinking livestock by a water feature. The fine details in the tree clumps and the soft tones are typical of 19th-century watercolor art from Romanticism.
Inner frame dimensions: 23 x 17 cm. The paper size is presumably slightly larger. It is mounted in the original decorated frame and not examined outside the frame.
