Description from the seller
A very charming and characterful Mercator De Luxe Automatic men’s watch from the mid-20th century, produced around the 1950s to the early 1960s. This classic dress watch model represents the heyday of the Swiss watch industry, combining an elegant design with reliable mechanical movement.
The gold-colored case is in neat vintage condition and testifies to high quality thanks to an evident, thick gold plating of 20 microns. The official Swiss hallmark Plaque Or G 20 Microns with the maker’s logo is clearly etched between the bottom lugs. Thanks to this solid gold layer, the case has remained well preserved and shows hardly any wear on the sharp edges. On the back there is a sturdy, screwed stainless-steel back bearing the inscriptions Automatic, Stainless Steel Back and Swiss Made. The case has a classic, modest diameter of 35 millimeters, excluding the crown.
The light champagne to silver-colored dial breathes pure nostalgia and is equipped with gold-colored, applied indices and the iconic Dauphine hands. At the 3 o’clock position there is a date window that displays the days stylishly in red. The watch is fitted with a high, domed plexiglass (acrylic) that enhances the typical vintage look. The glass shows the usual superficial scratches and signs of aging around the edges, which can be largely polished away or replaced if desired.
The mechanical heart of this watch is a high-quality Swiss automatic movement equipped with 25 jewels to minimize friction and wear in the gear train. The movement has been extensively tested and is in good working condition. The watch has recently been fitted with a comfortable and high-quality brown leather replacement strap from the well-known American brand Hadley. This band has an 18 mm lug width and features a lining that is both anti-allergenic and water resistant. This lot offers a splendid opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts of mechanical Swiss watches to acquire a stylish, wearable, and historical piece.
