Madonna Orante, oil on canvas by the Italian School (XVIII–XIX), 19th century, Italy; overall 52 × 47 cm and sold with frame in a gold-leaf frame.
Description from the seller
Praying Madonna,
Oil on canvas, late 18th – early 19th century.
Italian milieu of Classicist culture.
The qualitative composition presented here depicts the devout Virgin, with hands joined and gaze raised upward, in an intense expression of spiritual contemplation. The face, delicately modeled through soft chiaroscuro, emerges from a dark, deep background, establishing a measured contrast with the warm red of the robe and the deep green of the mantle.
The painting can be attributed to an Italian artist active between the late 18th and early 19th century: a language that preserves formal composure and the idealization of the Classicist tradition, tempered by an intimate and gathered sensibility.
The oval format, traditionally associated with works for private settings and with easel-mounted religious furnishings, enhances the proportion of the face, the restrained gesture, and the elegance of the compositional arrangement.
Of particular interest, in the background there is a gold monogram that warrants further attribution.
The painting has been restored and relined in the last century.
It comes from a Turin residence.
Accompanying the work is a fascinating gold-leaf frame, presented as a homage.
Frame dimensions: 38 cm x 31 cm.
Overall dimensions: 52 cm x 47 cm.
