Description from the seller
Rare first edition, richly illustrated, of this work on the history of the Petit-Trianon in which the author describes the château, the botanical garden, the English garden, the village, and the celebrations drawing on plants, memoirs, and archives of the estate.
Louis XV commissioned the Petit-Trianon for Madame de Pompadour in 1764. However, she died soon after the construction began, so the castle was occasionally used by his new favorite, Madame du Barry. Louis XVI then gifted it to his wife, Marie Antoinette, who had it renovated for personal use.
Gustave Desjardins, Le Petit-Trianon. History and Description, Versailles, L. Bernard Editeur, 1885.
PP.: XVI, (II), 469, (I). COMPLETE, with 22 plates hors texte (of which 2 are in color) and many illustrations in the text.
A copy with maps in overall good condition, with the usual signs of use and age. Sparse foxing.
Contemporary half-leather binding with title and gilding on the spine, with some wear but well preserved overall. Endpapers in marbled paper.
