Dial and Hands
The exceptionally clean and well-preserved dial features a silver vertically brushed finish that catches the light beautifully. Applied indices with red accents provide a strong visual contrast, perfectly matched by the crisp black and red baton hands. The hands show their finish intact with no significant oxidation. At six o'clock, a date window with red numerals adds a striking touch to the layout. The printing remains clean with no visible loss, displaying the Rado and Marstron signatures alongside the electronic designation.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case features a cushion shape with a polished finish, maintaining an honest vintage condition with preserved geometry. There are light surface scratches consistent with normal wear, but no major dents or deep gouges are visible. A clear, domed acrylic crystal protects the dial, showing no major scratches or crazing. The watch is fitted with a knurled crown in good condition, signed with the Rado anchor logo.
Movement
Inside the case is the ESA 9154 electronic movement, an intriguing caliber featuring a transistorized balance wheel. The movement displays a clean appearance with no visible corrosion and is engraved with Rado Electronic, Lic Ato, and Thirteen 13 Jewels Swiss. A battery is present, powering the traditional mechanical balance wheel through a transistor circuit. The timegrapher records a rate of -20-25s/day. Performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a black leather strap featuring white contrast stitching. It shows light visible wear and provides a complementary aesthetic to the vibrant dial accents.
Condition
Excellent vintage condition. The stainless steel case retains its attractive cushion geometry with only light surface scratches expected from normal wear. The dial and hands are exceptionally well-preserved, showing crisp colors and clean surfaces. The movement is clean and, supported by the timegrapher data, is running strong and steady.
Dimensions
The case measures 38mm (excluding the crown).
Remarks
This Rado Marstron offers a compelling mix of bold 1970s styling and transitional horological technology. The clean brushed dial and reliable ESA 9154 electronic movement make it a fantastic and highly wearable collector timepiece.
History
The Rado Marstron emerged during a transitional era in watchmaking, bridging the gap between traditional mechanical calibers and the quartz revolution. The model utilizes an electro-mechanical movement, specifically the ESA 9154 Dynotron, where a battery-powered transistor circuit drives a traditional mechanical balance wheel. This innovative technology allowed for the accuracy of electronic regulation while maintaining the familiar sweep and mechanics of a conventional balance. Today, these early Swiss electronic movements remain highly appealing to specific collectors who appreciate the bold aesthetics and technical experimentation of the 1970s.
