This antique Dutch pewter collar jug dates from 1750–1800 and has an ebonised wooden handle.
Description from the seller
Antique heavy pewter pouring jug / coffee pot with an ebonised wooden handle and pseudo-silver marks – ca. 1790–1820
An exceptionally heavy and beautifully proportioned antique pewter pouring jug / coffee pot, manufactured around the turn of the 18th to the 19th century (c. 1790–1820).
The vessel is characterized by an elegant baluster shape on a profiled foot ring, a slender neck with a noticeably broad flaring collar edge, a gracefully bent S-shaped spout, and a domed loose lid with a turned knob. The ebonised wooden C-handle is firmly mounted in pewter mounts to the body and neck.
On the underside is a rich series of four stamped pseudo-silver marks (imitation hallmarks), including maker initials (e.g. 'M') and heraldic symbols. This type of stamping was applied by skilled pewterers to give the object the appearance of precious metal. Inside the lid there is also a round caster/quality mark.
With a total weight of no less than 1342 grams, this is a solid, expertly cast high-quality pewter piece.
