Bibbia di Manchester, French MS 5, a 13th‑century illuminated codex from northeastern France or Flanders, richly illustrated with full‑page miniatures in gold leaf and precious pigments, complete with case and commentary, attributed to Imago’s 2019 facsimile edition titled La nobiltà del facsimile.
Description from the seller
Manchester Bible - French MS 5
Preserved at Manchester, John Rylands Library
13th Century
48 leaves
Copy number: L
Magnificent example of a medieval illuminated Bible, enriched by a complete cycle of full-page miniatures, executed with gold leaf and precious pigments. The scenes depict central episodes of Genesis and Exodus, such as Creation, the Flood, and the Tower of Babel, with a refined style rich in iconographic detail.
The manuscript, produced in northeast France or Flanders at the beginning of the 13th century, represents a rare example of the so-called illustrated Bible book: a type in which images become absolute protagonists, with a narrative elegance that makes long textual writings superfluous.
The miniatures follow a coherent iconographic program and are accompanied by descriptive inscriptions, harmoniously integrated, which reinforce the symbolic reading of the sacred scenes.
This codex, known as MS 5 (Rylands), stands out for the balance between spirituality and art, and for its function as a high-status object. A work intended for a connoisseur of great taste and culture, that preserves intact its charm and aesthetic value after centuries.
