Splendid and rare commemorative bust made in an antique/antimony metal alloy depicting Christopher Columbus, a genuine period casting from 1892. The piece was created by the historic and renowned Fonderia Bartolomeo Muzio & C. of Genoa on the occasion of official celebrations for the IV Centenary of the discovery of the Americas (Italo-American Exhibition of 1892). The back of the bust bears a legible cursive signature engraved: "Fonderia Bart. Muzio C. Genova 1892", an absolute guarantee of authenticity and dating. The square architectural base is enhanced on the front by an elegant raised heraldic coat of arms. Extraordinary expressiveness of the face and meticulous care in the modeling of the hair and robes, according to the highest standards of Italian celebratory sculpture of the late nineteenth century. Excellent state of preservation with a magnificent original dark patina of the time and fascinating traces of gilding/finish from the period at the base, witness to the piece’s authenticity and lived history. No recent restoration. A piece of great visual impact and elegance, perfect to enhance professional offices, bookcases, or collections of antique art.
