Philibert Cockx (1879–1949)
Philibert Cockx (1879–1949) is a Belgian painter, engraver and etcher. He sits at the heart of Belgian avant-garde movements in the first half of the 20th century, oscillating between late Impressionism, Brabant Fauvism, and Expressionism.
Training and beginnings
• A self-taught path: Born in Ixelles in 1879, he begins by working as a blacksmith, farrier and decorative painter until the age of 17. This artisanal approach would deeply mark him: he would also make his own paints throughout his life.
• Academic study: He first studied at the Saint-Josse-ten-Noode Academy with Félix Cogen, then attended evening classes at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels under the realist painter Isidore Verheyden.
Style and influences
• Brabant Fauvism: Cockx joined the free workshop “L’Effort.” There he met major figures in Belgian art such as Auguste Oleffe, Rik Wouters, Jos Albert or Jean Brusselmans. Inspired by Cézanne’s art, he simplifies forms and uses color in an expressive way.
Dominant themes: His work is deeply intimate. He excels in still lifes (often consisting of flowers or vases), hushed interior scenes, portraits (notably of his close ones) as well as Brabantine and suburban landscapes.
