Micheline Evrard Boyadjian (1923–2019)
Micheline Boyadjian (born Micheline Evrard, 1923–2019) is a major figure in naïve painting and modern art in Belgium.
A singular and late journey
Born in Bruges in 1923 to a bourgeois Walloon-origin family, she received a strict religious education before becoming a secretary. A mother living in Brussels, it was only in 1954 (at the age of 31) that she felt the imperative need to paint. She enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Brussels, notably in Léon Devos’s studio. Very quickly, she freed herself from strict academic rules to develop her own visual language, spontaneous and figurative.
The style: The art of daily mystery
Although often described as a “naïve painter” by critics due to the purity of her line, Micheline Boyadjian distinguishes herself with a rigorous technique, a high command of geometry, vanishing points and perspective.
• Preferred themes: She mainly painted silent landscapes, views from windows, intimate interiors, objects suspended in time (booths/kiosks, umbrellas, pianos) and characters haloed with mystery.
• Atmosphere: Her paintings evoke a “poetry of silence” and poetic realism. Critics praise her rigor, integrity and total artistic independence.
Private life and posterity
She shared her life with her husband, the Armenian-born cardiologist Noubar Boyadjian. Together, the couple engaged in patronage and widely disseminated art collection.
Micheline Boyadjian died in Ixelles in July 2019 at the age of 96. Today, her works are part of prestigious public collections in Belgium.
