Description from the seller
Sedia "PK9" (Tulip Chair) – Design Poul Kjærholm – Production Fritz Hansen (1960) in Ivory Leather and Satin Steel
We present at auction one of the most refined and representative projects of twentieth-century Nordic design culture: the PK9 chair, designed by Poul Kjærholm in 1960 and produced by Fritz Hansen.
An exemplar of excellence in coordinated leather and steel workmanship, the PK9 expresses the author's rigorous structural research, offering an ergonomic and enveloping seat with a strong sculptural value (new list price value: € 6,000 – € 8,500).
Design and History: A Synthesis Between Geometry and Anatomy
The PK9 chair stems from careful research into organic forms and material strength:
Inspiration and Form: The enveloping shell is molded along fluid and ergonomic lines, conceived to follow the body's anatomy and guarantee natural comfort.
Architecture of the Base: The famous three-leg satin steel structure supports the seat with an elegant play of geometric tensions, combining visual lightness with structural stability.
Lot Conditions: Excellent Conservational State
The auction specimen is presented in excellent period-use condition, with physiological signs of time that confirm its authenticity:
Ivory Leather Upholstery: The ivory-toned leather is well preserved, soft and intact, with slight and natural patinas of use consistent with the piece's age. The surface has been cleaned, disinfected, and treated with professional products for leather nourishment.
Steel Base: The three-spoke satin steel structure is solid, free of defects, and recently cleaned and polished.
Authenticity Marking: The original Fritz Hansen label is present under the seat, attesting to production and authenticity.
Dimensions
Height: 77 cm
Width: 57 cm
Depth: 60 cm
The Designer and the Manufacture
Poul Kjærholm (1929–1980): Danish design master, distinguished in the Nordic scene for choosing steel as the primary structural material, pairing it with leather, canvas, and wood with engineering rigor and sartorial craftsmanship.
Fritz Hansen: Historic Danish manufacturer founded in 1872, a reference point for international designer furniture and guarantor of very high production standards.
