Orthodox Bronze/Bronze-Copper Vigil Lamp (Kandili) with Theotokos (Mother of God) in Relief – Byzantine Style – 20th Century

A very fine, elegantly detailed standing Orthodox vigil lamp, locally known as a Kandili or Kandilo. This type of religious object is traditionally used in the Eastern Orthodox tradition on a home altar (icon corner) or in a liturgical setting.

The lamp is richly decorated in traditional Byzantine style. The openwork (perforated) dome is designed to guide the heat of the flame and is on four sides adorned with beautifully cast reliefs of the Theotokos (Mother of God with the Christ Child) in a semicircular arch. The top of the lid is crowned by a characteristic Orthodox cross with an intricate knot motif. The base and the chalice-show finely worked friezes with floral motifs and arches. Over the years the piece has developed a beautiful, authentic dark patina that gives extra depth to the details. A stunning collectible for lovers of religious art, icons and Orthodox antique items.
