NASA Langley 1969 – Moon landing trainer and contact print, two original photographs from 1969, silver gelatin on baryta paper, sheet 1 26.65 × 20.35 cm and sheet 2 23.50 × 26.75 cm, good condition, stamped.
Description from the seller
PAGE 1
Armstrong practicing the Moon landing — a pair of original NASA photographs, Langley 1969
Two silver gelatin prints on baryta paper — the pair is not separated
PAGE 1
The Lunar Landing Research Facility (LLRF) at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, at night: the full-scale Moon lander simulator, the NASA emblem on the hull, hangs from the hangar crane above a recreated lunar landscape; a technician with helmet and white coverall provides the scale. In this facility Neil Armstrong practiced the final meters of the moon landing. Along the edge is the typed archival number “NASA L-69-4373” — “L” for Langley, “69” for the year of the recording, 1969.
PAGE 2
A contact print: two 4×5-inch original negatives — the model of a lunar surface with the lander mounted, shots 1 and 3 of the same series — were placed directly on the paper during exposure. Therefore the film edge inscription reads “KODAK SAFETY FILM” in light lettering on a dark background. A first-generation print, directly from the original negative.
AUTHENTICITY
Baryta paper with silvering in the dark areas, the kind that develops only over decades. Page 1 measures exactly 8 × 10.5 inches, the American government format “Government Letter”; Page 2 is about 9.25 × 10.5 inches, slightly wider. The backs bear no stamps; this fits with internal laboratory and work material — genuine NASA prints are often unstamped.
Technique: silver gelatin on baryta paper, 2 sheets
Dimensions: Page 1 26.65 x 20.35 cm (vertical), Page 2 23.5 x 26.75 cm (horizontal)
Weight: 21 g (both sheets together)
CONDITION
As aging allows, lightly warm-toned, the sheets slightly warped, no creases. In the dark areas a silver mirror and fine scratch and polish marks, most evident in the night sky of Page 1 (well visible in oblique light, photos 4 and 5). The backs show storage staining (pink discoloration toward the center). Please view the photos as part of the description.
ORIGIN
From an older mixed-paper lot, acquired at a flea market. No additional provenance is recorded.
SHIPPING
Flat, between rigid boards, in an acid-free sleeve. Pick-up in Helmstedt available.
