Description from the seller
Pair of antique Japanese lacquered wooden bowls with lids – Gold decoration on vermilion red background – Japan – Showa period
Elegant pair of traditional Japanese bowls with lids, called suimono-wan, made of lacquered wood and dating probably to the Showa era, around the 1950s–1980s.
These two bowls feature a bright vermilion red lacquer, characteristic of traditional Japanese lacquer art (urushi).
The refined decoration, rendered in gold, bronze, and black tones, depicts an object reminiscent of a ceremonial Japanese vessel, accompanied by large stylized circular motifs and delicate gold interlaced lines.
The decorative compositions extend onto the lids, creating a particularly harmonious set.
The rims of the bowls and lids are delicately outlined with a gold finish.
The inside of the bowls is entirely vermilion red lacquer, while their exterior base presents a black finish.
The contrast between the deep red, gold motifs, and black details gives this set an elegance typical of Japanese design.
These bowls were traditionally intended for serving clear soups (suimono) during refined Japanese meals or ceremonies.
