Biography of the painter:
Antoni Mut Torroja, also known as Juan Antonio Mut Torroja, was a Catalan painter, printmaker and draftsman born in 1921 and died in Barcelona in 1990. His place of birth is documented indistinctly as Barcelona and Sitges. He trained at the School of Arts and Crafts of La Llotja in Barcelona and held his first solo exhibition in 1940 at Faianç Català, where he presented humorous drawings and watercolors. In 1947 he moved to Paris, where he resided until 1952 and where he collaborated with Galerie Hervé de Montmartre. During his stay in France he carried out intense artistic activity, exhibiting in Paris, Reims, Lyon, Toulouse and Nice, as well as in Antwerp and Brussels. In 1952 he returned to Barcelona and presented a collection of Parisian landscapes at the Grifé y Escoda gallery.
His early output was characterized by expressive figurative painting, with special attention to landscapes, seascapes and representations of clowns and vagabonds. Subsequently, his pictorial language evolved towards abstraction and informalism, incorporating mixed techniques, collage, varied materials and elaborate textures. In 1980 he exhibited at the Sacharoff gallery in Barcelona, where his work was discussed by art critic Ángel Marsà, who highlighted his combination of gestural painting and experimentation with materials. He also developed illustration and poster work, for which he used the pseudonym Tam. Some sold works are signed as A. Mut, Antoni Mut, Mut Torroja or T. Bassols, although the latter attribution requires individual verification. His career spans from the expressionist figurativism of the mid-20th century to the abstract and informalist experimentation of his later decades.
