3 Balinese Sculpturen - Bust - Indonesia

Auctioning Offered: a beautiful, museum-quality collection of three heavy, hand-carved Balinese wood sculptures from the early heyday of Balinese art (early Art Deco and postwar flourishing period). All three sculptures are carved from a single solid block of extremely dense and heavy tropical hardwood (most likely Coromandel wood / satinwood) and are in excellent vintage condition with no broken parts. Photos are part of the description. The total weight of this set is no less than 7,183 grams (just over 7.1 kg), underscoring the absolute top quality and density of the antique wood.

The collection consists of:

1. A very elegant and minimalist pre-war / early postwar bust with a serene gaze and a clean, geometric headdress. The underside shows beautiful, authentic hand-cut tool marks from a traditional adze and a deep patina of age.

2. Seated Janger-Dancer with Fan Headdress (ca. 1950-1970): An expressive and all-around fully detailed carved figure of a seated dancer. Both the front and back feature extremely finely worked floral patterns in the clothing (Kain) and elegantly carved, slender fingers. The underside shows mild hand-tool marks and a natural shrink crack.

3. Monumental Dancer with Richly Decorated Headdress. The absolute centerpiece of the lot. A very large bust of a Legong-/Janger-dancer with a fabulous open-work ceremonial crown (Gelungan) and detailed earrings (subeng). The rear is beautifully stylized with geometric grooves. The bottom shows a pristine pattern of hand-tool indents and a lived-in patina.
