Description from the seller
Amore e Psiche. Refined and evocative oil painting on canvas, originally made as an overdoor (dessus-de-porte), a typical decorative element of noble houses in the 19th century.
The work is composed of two registers:
Upper register: Depicts a delicate mythological scene (the famous tale of the metamorphoses of Apuleius, Cupid and Psyche) rendered with soft brushstrokes and an enveloping chromatic palette that plays with the lights and shadows of the nocturnal/inner scene.
Lower register: Presents a fine decorative frieze (garlands of flowers and fruits) in grisaille or natural colors, a distinctive element that gives the painting its architectural function as an ornament for door architraves or interior passages.
A piece of great elegance, perfect for those who wish to add a touch of authentic classical nobility to a modern setting or to complete a philological restoration of a historic house.
Technique: Oil on canvas.
Era: Late 18th century, early 19th century
Condition: Good vintage condition. The canvas shows a natural patina of time that confirms its authenticity. The painterly film is stable.
Dimensions: 110 x 80 cm for the upper register (oil on canvas), 170 x 106 cm overall footprint, with frame and non-contemporary glass
Use: Decorative furnishing element for overdoors, prestigious bookcases, or as a visually striking painting in living rooms and studies.
