Description from the seller
Leopoldo Vaccà Berlinghieri
Examination of the heat theory of the famous English Crawford, with some new conjectures on the same subject
Pisa, for Ranieri Prosperi, Printer of the Almo Studio Pisano, 1787.
First edition of Leopoldo Vaccà Berlinghieri's treatise dedicated to the examination of the theories on heat formulated by the English scientist Adair Crawford.
A work of interest for the history of physics and chemistry in the eighteenth century, in which, among other topics, the nature and transmission of heat, combustion, respiration and animal heat are discussed, with reference to contemporary experimental and scientific theories.

Binding
Beautiful full red leather binding, presumably contemporary, with an elegant ornamental gold border impressed on the boards and a richly gilded spine.
Gilded edges.
Marbled paste-downs.
The quality of the binding, the gilded decoration, and the gilded edges give the copy a particularly elegant appearance.
Condition
Overall very well preserved interior, on strong paper with good margins.
Normal and sporadic signs of time, light stains or foxing and small signs of use, as visible in the photographs.
There is at least one ancient marginal handwritten note, with the word “formazione” (formation), corresponding to a correction also indicated in the final errata. The note is not attributed to any specific person.
The binding shows wear, abrasions, small defects and superficial losses, especially along edges, joints and more exposed parts, as documented photographically.
The first blank white leaf is missing.
At the end of the volume is the guard leaf; of the rear marbled flyleaf, the part attached to the endpaper is preserved, while the corresponding free marbled leaf is missing.
These deficiencies concern only the guard/advertising leaves of the binding and not the printed text, which is complete according to the collation described above.
The photographs are an integral part of the description and show in detail the condition of the copy.
