Description from the seller
Rare two-volume illustrated edition with 14 engravings, 12 of which are folding -
The narrative is based on the work of the Spanish historian Antonio de Solís y Ribadeneyra, whose text, translated into French by the author of the Triumvirate, presents the events related to Hernán Cortés’s expedition and the fall of the Aztec Empire -
The first volume sets out the circumstances that led Cortés to undertake his expedition, after his departure from Cuba in 1519, and describes the initial stages of his advance into Mexican territory -
The second volume continues the account of the tensions between the Spaniards and the Aztec authorities and describes the events that precipitate the collapse of Tenochtitlan’s power. The uprisings, urban battles, supply difficulties, and losses suffered by both sides illustrate the increasing violence of the conflict -
