One 1600 original German woodcut by Monogrammista IS titled Purificazione di Maria – Presentazione di Gesù al Tempio, in good condition with age-related markings, sheet size 310×205 mm.
Description from the seller
The woodcut depicts the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple, associated with the Purification feast of Mary, called Candlemas. The Child, with a radiant halo, is shown at the center of the scene near the altar, surrounded by Mary, Joseph, and the figures who participate in the ceremony. The environment features architecture, draperies and rich details in the garments, in keeping with the German Renaissance taste.
The lively contemporary coloring, executed by hand in ochre, red, green and blue tones, enhances the figures and the depth of the scene. Under the image, a large ornate initial introduces the passage from the Gospel of Luke, chapter two. On the back (verso) the Gospel text and the religious commentary continue, preceded by a Latin quotation.
Text in German, in Gothic lettering, with Latin quotations."
Sheet 310x205 mm
paper with yellowing, browning and scattered stains. Irregular margins with small tears and losses, especially along the upper edge; some small marginal holes. Handwritten annotations on the verso and slight signs of folding. The figurative part essentially intact, well legible and with colors still vivid.
