Description
Obsession is an original oil painting on canvas belonging to the preparatory studies of Spleen et Idéal, a new painting project by NUSH Menna inspired by Les Fleurs du mal by Charles Baudelaire.
The project stems from the idea of traversing some of Baudelaire's poems with contemporary painting. Each work originates from a different text without trying to illustrate it literally: poetry acts as initial material and is transformed into face, color, light, and presence.
In Obsession the portrait is built through successive layers and subtle oil glazes. Particular attention is given to the eyes, the complexion, and the minimal passages of light that define the face. The tiniest details are executed with very fine brushes.
The styling of the hair introduces a special tactile element: some strands are painted using gold thread color, applied with the fine fur of the brush. Gold does not cover the surface but appears as lines, catching the light differently depending on the viewing point and creating a contrast with the depth of the darker areas.
The title alludes to Charles Baudelaire's poem Obsession, where nature loses any consoling possibility: forests, sea, and night become presences that return the person to his own fears. In the painting this tension is transferred to the face. The gaze remains still, while the painted surface seems to be traversed by something that cannot find peace.
The project — Spleen et Idéal
Obsession constitutes one of the studies of a larger project in which NUSH Menna reinterprets through painting some of Charles Baudelaire's poems.
Each painting will be autonomous, yet linked to the others by the same origin: a poem from Les Fleurs du mal transported to the present through faces, bodies, and contemporary imagery.
These works constitute the initial studies toward developing the series also in larger formats. For this reason each work preserves a double nature: a completed unique piece and a trace of the genesis of a new painterly series.
The series is conceived as a coherent nucleus intended for private collection but also for potential exhibition development in a gallery.
Technique and authenticity
Original and unique work, entirely handmade by the artist in 2026.
Oil painting is built through layering, glazings, and interventions carried out with brushes of varying fineness. The surface is finished with a final protective varnish to preserve the painting and its color depth over time.
The work comes directly from the artist's studio and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by NUSH Menna.
Framing
The work is offered unframed.
Any frames, mats, and settings visible in the photographs are for illustrative purposes only and serve to show possible presentation options.
If the winning bid significantly exceeds the reserve price, the artist may include a simple frame as a complimentary addition, chosen in harmony with the work.
Otherwise, the painting will be carefully protected and shipped rolled in a rigid tube, a solution that reduces the risk of damage during transport.
Shipping notes
The work will be prepared with professional and careful packaging. Whenever possible, recycled and recyclable materials will be used or reused to minimize waste and the environmental impact of shipping.
The colors visible in the photographs may differ slightly from the original work due to lighting conditions during the shoot and the different technologies, calibrations, and settings of monitors, smartphones, and tablets.
Ambient images are simulations created exclusively to suggest possible placements of the work. Frames, mats, furniture, and other elements shown in the settings are not included in the purchase, unless otherwise indicated.
The proportions in the ambient images may appear slightly different from reality. For actual dimensions, refer only to the measurements stated in this sheet: 30 × 40 cm.
Original unique work — NUSH Menna, 2026.
