Exclusive Antique Hoshiarpur Octagonal Side Table – Signed by Kanhaya Lal Brij Lal – Created from Shisham Wood & Richly Inlaid with Bone & Brass – Punjab, North India – Victorian Period (c. 1875-1890)
Description:
A museum-grade and exceedingly rare specimen of an Anglo-Indian octagonal side table from the renowned artisan town of Hoshiarpur (Punjab, North India), dating back to the golden age of Punjabi craftsmanship in the late Victorian period (c. 1875-1890).
The underside of the table retains its original and highly coveted paper maker's label by Kanhaya Lal Brij Lal (Ivory, Brass, Wood Work Manufacturers, Hooshiarpur). Established in 1855, this prestigious workshop achieved great historical significance as one of the few master studios to hold an official export license, producing premium inlaid furniture for the European exhibition market. The table features dense and intricate inlay masterfully crafted from genuine bone (bone inlay) and delicate brass wire pressed into the rich shisham hardwood.
The top surface features breathtaking, dense inlay work composed of flowing floral and foliate trailing stems centered around a large rosette. The collapsible base showcases masterfully pierced woodwork with traditional niche-shaped arches.
Condition & Restoration:
The table is in a beautiful, structurally sound condition with a deep, authentic historical patina. The piece has undergone a highly skilled, sympathetic, and irreversible restoration to the central floral motifs on the top panel, executed to preserve its continuous visual aesthetics.
