AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Stunning original watercolor from the Belle Époque period, by the famous French writer, caricaturist, and landscape artist Ferdinand Bac (1859-1952).

Ferdinand-Sigismond Bach, known as Ferdinand Bac, was a major intellectual and social figure of the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th. A first-cousin of Emperor Napoleon III, he mingled with all of Paris during the Belle Époque. While today he is famous for his sumptuous garden designs on the Côte d'Azur (such as Villa Les Colombières in Menton), he first gained immense renown as a press cartoonist and illustrator.

This is a scene of romantic inspiration, of theatrical seduction. An elegant Spanish woman (a Maja) wearing a yellow lace-trimmed dress, a white mantilla, and holding a fan steps forward on steps strewn with roses. At her feet, a young man in traditional costume (embroidered vest, red sash) unfolds a cape onto the ground in a gallant gesture.
Signature at the bottom right “F. Bac”, drawn with a pen.

The work is mounted on a thick gold-colored mat that greatly enhances the painting.

Careful packaging and insured, trackable shipment.
