Dating: 'probably 19th century'
The animals, trees and vegetation are worked out with fine brushstrokes, in contrast to the softer color transitions in the sky and the water. The label on the reverse mentions a probable dating in the 19th century; this dating has not been independently confirmed.
Framing:
With frame. The painting is enclosed in a wide, gold-colored decorative frame with pronounced leaf-and-scroll ornaments. The warm finish nicely complements the colors of the landscape.
Discussion and analysis of the work:
A atmospheric rural scene with three cattle at a quiet riverside. On the left, dark tree trunks and broadly spreading branches form a natural boundary. On the right, the landscape opens toward the water and a distant village silhouette with a church tower.
The composition derives its appeal from the contrast between the shaded foreground and the bright sky. Soft pink, peach and gold tones suggest evening light and recur in the water. The reddish-brown and dark coats of the animals harmonize with the earth tones and the green of the bank.
Flowers, low vegetation, and a fallen tree trunk give the foreground a refined detailing. The whole project has a rustic, idyllic character and stylistically aligns with the Romantic landscape tradition. The richly decorated frame enhances the classical, decorative appearance.
