Background information about the old Randwijk church:
From excavations it has emerged that there originally stood a 12th-century stone-column chapel. This little church had a narrow rectangular choir, and the nave was as wide as the current central nave. Probably this chapel was rebuilt or restored in brick in the 13th century. In the 15th century a tower was added here. By the end of the 15th century the old nave and choir were replaced by new construction.

The oldest mention of the church dates to 1395, when the church is listed in the Utrecht dom-factory list. The church possessed a vicarage for Saint Antonius and for Our Lady.

During the Reformation in the 16th century the church passed into Protestant hands. In 1614 there were still protests against the relics that were present in the Randwijk church.

In 1901 the church burned. In 1925 major renovations followed, in which the pillars in the nave were reduced to two, and the original four pointed-arch voussoirs were replaced by round arches. Service rooms were created by constructing walls in the nave and aisles. Part of the side walls was also raised with gables, so that larger windows and thus more light could enter.

In the winter of 1944-1945 the German occupier blew up the tower. The nave was also destroyed. The pulpit could be saved, but was not restored and was probably burned during the same winter.

After the war the choir was restored and in 1953 the new nave was completed. The pillars removed in 1925 were reinstalled, but the side aisles were narrower than originally. The foundation of the old side walls is still visible on the exterior in the form of sidewalks.
