An antique European folk art wooden decoy of a male mallard drake, hand-carved and hand-painted, dating to circa 1930–1940, measuring 33 cm long by 15 cm wide in good antique condition with minor signs of aging.
Description from the seller
Beautiful and highly decorative antique European hunting decoy of a male wild duck (Anas platyrhynchos), dating from about the 1930s–1940s. This atmospheric object is a splendid example of authentic folk art.
The hood is immediately recognizable by its deep-green head, light neck ring, and characteristic ochre-colored bill. The wing mirror is painted with bold, expressive lines in shades of black and gold/cream, giving the creature a beautifully graphic and rustic appearance.
The decoy is entirely hand-carved from a single piece of wood. The surface shows a wonderfully aged character with extensive, natural patina and a handsome patina. The paint layers have, over the decades, acquired a lovely matte, weathered texture with the grain of the wood subtly visible here and there. The underside is completely flat finished for stability.
A perfect collectible for enthusiasts of early hunting paraphernalia, taxidermy, and curiosities, or as a distinctive focal point in a country or eclectic interior.
