A five-volume illustrated hardback set, titled Familiar Garden Flowers, figured by F. Edward Hulme and described by Shirley Hibberd, published by Cassell and Co. in English circa 1900, with 1120 pages, dimensions 19.5 × 13.5 cm, weight 2.3 kg, in very good condition and complete with 200 chromolithographic colour plates in total.
Description from the seller
Familiar Garden Flowers, figured by F. Edward Hulme and described by Shirley Hibberd, published by Cassell and Company, all five series complete in five volumes, undated but c. 1900.
Each series has [xvi] 160 pages with 40 chromolithographic plates, so 200 colour plates in all. Each plant shown has a text description which also includes two black and white vignettes. Each series has its own title page, preface, contents page and synopsis. Series 5 also has an additional 8 pages with an Index of English Names, an Index of Botanical Names and an Index of Botanical Orders. All volumes have at the end 16 pages with ‘A Selected List of Cassell & Company’s Publications’.
Original green cloth binding with Arts and Crafts cover design and impressed gilt titles to front covers and spines. Upper page edges are dyed green. Some scuffing and slight wear to covers, but overall very good condition. Tanning to some end papers. Internally, there is light spotting to text pages, heavier in a few places. Several of the colour plates in Series 1 are also affected, although by far the great majority of the colour plates, printed on heavier paper than the text pages, are still clean and bright. The plate ‘Major convolvulus’ in Series 5 is all but detached. A few page hinges cracking a little, but bindings otherwise holding firm. All five series have the same owner bookplate on the front end paper.
Overall an attractive, clean set in very good condition.
