TEUFELSBUCH, Theatri Diabolorum, Das ist: Warhaffte eigentliche und kurtze Beschreibung, a two‑volume 1587 German diabolical/religious history work, 1400 pages, bound in a blind‑stamped pigskin binding with Luther portrait, in acceptable condition.
Description from the seller
The Theatre of the Devils, that is: A true, actual and brief description of various filthy, terrible and abominable vices 1587.
Extremely rare devil book, which is hardly to be found in trade anymore, printed by Sigmund Feyerabend in Frankfurt.
Very rare edition on the various kinds of devils, in 2 volumes with a total of 33 tracts about the devil, including “Of the Devil's Tyrants,” “On the Sorcerer Devil,” “Against the Whore's Devil / and all sorts of immorality.”
With 2 beautifully colored title vignettes as well as several colored printer's ornaments.
Bound in a period blind-stamped pigskin leather binding, with an embossed portrait of Martin Luther.
The binding is in used condition. In many places the leather is coming away, it lifts slightly and there are some losses.
The back cover is somewhat rubbed. Additionally the rear cover and the spine of the book block are detached, the front cover is somewhat loosened but still tight.
The pages are uniformly slightly browned and in the lower and inner areas somewhat speckled, occasionally with light foxing.
The first six unnumbered leaves of the first part show some margin losses and are badly loosened.
In the second part leaves 279, 280, 283 and 288-312 are loose.
From leaf 288 there are some margin losses.
The book ends with leaf 312, therefore the last 68 leaves as well as the index are missing. Of the missing 68 leaves leaf 335 is fragmentarily preserved.
Collation: 6 leaves, 1 blank leaf, 302 leaves, 7 leaves, 1 blank leaf, 5 leaves, 1 blank leaf, 312 (of 380) leaves, fragmentary leaf 335, without the index
Dimensions: 35 x 24 cm
