Characteristics of Tramp Art

• Carving technique: Tramp art is a folk-art form where small pieces of wood (often recycled from cigar boxes or wooden packaging) are glued or sewn together with notches, layers, and geometric patterns.

• Dating: Many pieces of this kind date from the late 19th century to the early 20th century (around 1900).

• Details: The cross and the pedestal display characteristic serrated edges ("chip carving" or "notch carving") and often a heart-shaped motif on the front of the base.
